Happy New Year Higher Ed

What’s so fascinating and frustrating and great about life is that you’re constantly starting over, all the time, and I love that. ~ Billy Crystal

After thirty-five years in higher education, the calendar year loses relevance. For those of us in higher education July 1st is New Year Day. To celebrate my academic New Year’s Eve, the end of my thirty-fifth year in education I had a quiet night and a lovely steak dinner. Took some time to reflect on my career as an instructor, Director, Advisor and Dean. I thought about all of the thousands of students I have encountered in my career and especially the few I’m still actively in touch with. It’s been a good career that is close to coming to a close.

So just like every year, we take a deep breath in June and in July we gear up and do it all over again. For all of you going through this cycle again, or for the first time, remember that you’re doing service work. You’re about to embark on another year where, whether you know it or not, you’ll be changing lives for the better, good on you. So hold your head up high, it’s not easy work, it’s at times thankless but it, and you truly matter.

Happy New Year my friends.
